Sholl Faces Crowded Route Back to Reign Crease

Mattias Sholl returns to the Ontario Reign organization on a one-year AHL contract for 2026-27, but his path to regular playing time in the AHL remains crowded.

Ontario announced the new deal July 23. The 25-year-old goaltender from Hermosa Beach, California, made one appearance for the Reign last season after signing his first AHL contract in 2025. He allowed four goals in a December loss to the San Jose Barracuda.

Most of his first full professional season came with the ECHL's Greenville Swamp Rabbits. In 22 games, Sholl went 8-9-2 with a 2.77 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage and one shutout. He joined Greenville after finishing four seasons at Bemidji State and played four ECHL games at the end of 2024-25.

The Kings' goaltending depth chart includes prospects Carter George and Hampton Slukynsky, while Ontario has fellow AHL-contracted goalie Owen Flores. LA Kings Insider listed Sholl and Flores as the two goaltenders on AHL deals entering camp.

Hockey Royalty projects Sholl to begin the season with Greenville, where he could get steady starts and remain available for an Ontario recall. The Reign have not announced a 2026-27 assignment for him.
