Schmaltz scores twice as Mammoth beat Blue Jackets 4-1
Utah converts three power plays, and Sebastian Cossa earns a win in his first NHL start.
Nick Schmaltz scored two goals as the Utah Mammoth won 4-1 against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Utah converted three of its four power plays and improved to 2-0-0. Dylan Guenther contributed a goal and two assists, while Mikhail Sergachev had a goal and an assist. Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley each assisted on two goals.
Sebastian Cossa earned the win with 17 saves in his first NHL start. At the other end, Jet Greaves stopped 27 shots for Columbus, which is 1-1-0.
Sergachev scored on the power play at 11:55 of the first period. Schmaltz followed at 16:31, finishing Keller's pass from the left circle. Kent Johnson brought Columbus within one at 1:30 of the second period after Matthew Knies sent him up the ice.
The Mammoth added two power-play goals in the third period. Guenther scored at 5:59 from a Cooley pass, and Schmaltz completed his two-goal night at 14:13. NHL.com identified Keller's assist on the first Schmaltz goal as his 600th NHL point and Schmaltz's final goal as his 500th.
