Sam Steel Signs Four-Year, $14.8 Million Extension With Stars
The 28-year-old forward, who was a year from unrestricted free agency, is signed in Dallas through 2030-31.
Sam Steel signed a four-year, $14.8 million contract extension with the Dallas Stars on Monday. The deal begins next season and carries a $3.7 million average annual value.
Steel was entering the final season of his current contract and could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2027. The extension keeps him under contract through the 2030-31 season.
The 28-year-old set NHL career highs last season, his third with Dallas, with 12 goals, 21 assists and 33 points in 73 regular-season games. He had no points in six Stanley Cup Playoff games.
General manager Jim Nill cited Steel's consistency, penalty-killing work and versatility as reasons for the extension.
Anaheim selected Steel with the No. 30 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. He has 175 points, including 61 goals and 114 assists, in 491 regular-season games with the Ducks, Minnesota Wild and Stars. He also has 14 points in 48 playoff games.
Dallas opens its regular season at home against the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 2.
