Red Wings stress early urgency before opener against Rangers
Detroit starts Friday against the Rangers with seven of its first eight games at home and McLellan looking for sharper execution.
Detroit begins its season against the New York Rangers at Little Caesars Arena on Friday, Oct. 2, at 6:30 p.m. ET, with coach Todd McLellan urging his team to turn an intense training camp into a strong start.
Seven of the Red Wings' first eight games are at home. McLellan said the limited travel should give Detroit time to practise and an opportunity to build its game in front of its own fans.
Defenceman Moritz Seider described a camp with greater intensity than previous years, including players getting into position quickly between drills. He said the group wants to correct mistakes promptly rather than repeat them.
Detroit enters the opener without Dylan Larkin, who will miss the first two games with an upper-body injury. Restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned and has returned to Sweden.
McLellan said the opener will provide a clearer picture of where the team stands. His emphasis is on reducing errors early and making productive use of the opening home schedule.
