PWHL San Jose Signs Draft Picks Sloane Matthews and Tia Chan
The expansion club signed its second- and third-round selections to three-year contracts through the 2028-29 season.
PWHL San Jose signed forward Sloane Matthews and goaltender Tia Chan to three-year Standard Player Agreements on Tuesday, keeping both draft picks under contract through the 2028-29 season.
Matthews was selected 16th overall in the second round of the 2026 PWHL Draft. The 22-year-old from Wayzata, Minnesota, spent four seasons at Ohio State, winning the 2024 national championship and recording 104 points (48 goals, 56 assists) in 161 games. She set career highs with 20 goals, 24 assists and 44 points last season and led the Buckeyes with seven power-play goals.
Chan was selected 28th overall in the third round. The 24-year-old from Hamilton, Ontario, won the 2025-26 Women's College Hockey Goalie of the Year Award and earned First Team All-American honors at UConn. She posted a 1.55 goals-against average in 37 appearances and set Huskies single-season records for wins (27), saves (1,122) and save percentage (.951). She finished her college career as UConn's all-time leader in wins (70), shutouts (25) and save percentage (.946), and represented China at the 2022 Olympics.
Matthews becomes San Jose's eighth forward under contract. Chan joins Corinne Schroeder and Abbey Levy in the club's goaltending group.
The signings follow San Jose's three-year deal with fourth-overall pick Laila Edwards. San Jose now has 16 players under contract, with Edwards, Matthews and Chan the only three signed through 2028-29. The expansion team will debut at SAP Center this season.
