PWHL Detroit hires Danielle Goyette and Jimmy Howard as coaches
Goyette joins the expansion team as an assistant coach; former Red Wings goaltender Howard will coach its goalies.
PWHL Detroit hired Danielle Goyette as an assistant coach and Jimmy Howard as goaltending coach, the expansion club announced Tuesday. They join head coach Josh Sciba and assistant coach Molly Engstrom ahead of Detroit’s inaugural 2026-27 season.
Goyette spent the past five years with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, most recently as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ director of player development. She previously coached the University of Calgary to a U SPORTS national championship in 2012 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.
General manager Manon Rhéaume said Goyette’s experience winning as a player and coach will be valuable to the new team. Goyette said she looked forward to helping build Detroit’s first professional women’s hockey team.
Howard played his entire 14-year NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, appearing in 543 regular-season games and recording 246 wins and 24 shutouts. Since retiring in 2021, he has coached with the Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club. Rhéaume said his experience will help Detroit’s goaltenders handle the mental demands of the position.
