Penguins place Taylor Gauthier on waivers, assign six defencemen to WBS
Gauthier must clear waivers before a move to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton; Pittsburgh also sent six AHL-contract defencemen to its affiliate.
The Pittsburgh Penguins placed goaltender Taylor Gauthier on waivers Wednesday, Sept. 23, for the purpose of assigning him to the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He would have to clear waivers before the assignment becomes official.
Pittsburgh also assigned six defencemen on AHL contracts to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton: David Breazeale, Tyler Duke, Brent Johnson, Ryan Mast, Maleek McGowan and Broten Sabo. The club returned forward Carter Sanderson to the WHL's Calgary Hitmen and loaned defenceman Tomas Galvas to Bili Tygri Liberec in Czechia.
Gauthier signed a one-year, two-way extension with Pittsburgh that runs through the 2026-27 season and carries an $850,000 average annual value at the NHL level. The Penguins said he went 21-9-5 in 36 games with ECHL Wheeling last season, recording a 2.09 goals-against average, a .929 save percentage and three shutouts.
