NHL 27 Face Scans Draw Laughs From Players at Media Tour
More than a dozen NHL players reviewed their digital avatars in Las Vegas, with reactions ranging from impressed to horrified.
EA Sports' NHL 27 arrived that week, but some of the game's player likenesses quickly became a bigger topic online than the gameplay itself.
At the NHL/NHLPA Player Media Tour in Las Vegas, ESPN showed more than a dozen players their digital avatars and several viral scans of teammates. The reactions ranged from approval of small details to criticism of facial features, hair and beards.
Boston Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei's likeness drew a comparison to Pennywise the Clown. Montreal Canadiens winger Cole Caufield's scan also became a frequent target among fellow players, while Chicago Blackhawks forward Oliver Moore was among the other young players discussed.
Several players said their avatars looked tired, frightened or much older than they do in person. Others praised the game's attention to details such as hair color and facial structure. Even those who were unhappy with their scans acknowledged the novelty of appearing in the game.
