Gavin McKenna wore an orange T-shirt pin before Toronto’s game against the New York Islanders on Wednesday to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Maple Leafs also showed a video at Scotiabank Arena before the game. During the ceremony, the public-address announcer spoke about listening, learning and taking action towards reconciliation, and honouring residential school survivors, their families and communities.

McKenna belongs to the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation. His grandfather, Joe Mason, was a residential school survivor, according to NHL.com. The orange pin connected the observance with the rookie’s Indigenous heritage.
