McDavid has five points, Michaels scores first NHL goal as Oilers beat Canucks 9-7
Edmonton built an 8-2 lead, then held off Vancouver as Leon Draisaitl scored twice and Owen Michaels recorded his first NHL goal.
Connor McDavid contributed a goal and four assists as the Edmonton Oilers won 9-7 against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Thursday, Oct. 1. The victory split the clubs’ opening two-game series after Vancouver won 6-5 in overtime on Tuesday.
Owen Michaels recorded his first NHL goal in the first period. He finished Mathieu Joseph’s pass at 14:26 for a 2-0 lead, with Evan Bouchard receiving the other assist. Bouchard scored 16 seconds later, and Ryan Shea added his first goal for Edmonton at 19:32. Vasily Podkolzin had opened the scoring on the power play.
Leon Draisaitl scored twice and added an assist. Bouchard finished with a goal and two assists, while Podkolzin and Kasperi Kapanen each had a goal and an assist. Devon Levi stopped 15 shots in his Oilers regular-season debut.
Edmonton reached 8-2 in the second period. McDavid scored short-handed at 7:49, followed by Kapanen on another short-handed breakaway at 8:23. Trent Frederic also scored for the Oilers.
Vancouver scored four straight goals to reduce the deficit to 8-6. Arshdeep Bains scored just before the second intermission, Marco Rossi scored twice early in the third, and Elias Pettersson added a power-play goal at 7:37.
Draisaitl’s second goal, on the power play at 9:26 of the third, put Edmonton ahead 9-6. Jamie Oleksiak scored at 18:31 for Vancouver. Paul Cotter and Brock Boeser had scored the Canucks’ first two goals in the second period.
Rossi finished with two goals and an assist, and Pettersson had a goal and two assists. Edmonton improved to 1-0-1; Vancouver fell to 1-1-0.
