Matt Basgall Signs One-Year AHL Contract with San Diego Gulls
Former Michigan State captain and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year signs a one-year deal with Anaheim's AHL affiliate.
Matt Basgall signed a one-year AHL contract with the San Diego Gulls, the team announced July 15, 2026.
The 23-year-old defenseman completed his senior season at Michigan State, where he served as captain and earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors. Basgall posted 20 points (4-16-20) in 37 games and was named to the Big Ten First All-Star Team.
Basgall first joined the Gulls on an amateur tryout last spring, appearing in four regular-season games, with one goal and one assist, plus two playoff games for Anaheim's AHL affiliate. He has now signed a one-year AHL deal for the 2026-27 season.
Basgall appeared in all 150 games during his four years under coach Adam Nightingale at Michigan State, going undrafted during his college career. He captained the Spartans to back-to-back Big Ten Tournament championships and three consecutive regular-season titles.
