Mark Stone fought Seattle defenceman Brandon Montour at 9:21 of the third period Tuesday, giving the Vegas Golden Knights a rare sight of their captain dropping the gloves. Both received five-minute fighting majors, according to the NHL’s official play-by-play.

The fight came after Ben Meyers hit Victor Olofsson into the boards at 8:03. Olofsson left the game and did not return. Meyers was assessed a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct.

In a column on the Golden Knights’ official website Wednesday, Gary Lawless described the response from Stone’s teammates: they struck the boards with their sticks after the fight and again when he left the penalty box. Lawless counted it as Stone’s seventh NHL fight. The 34-year-old captain’s willingness to intervene was the focus of the column, following Vegas’s 6-2 win.
