Fifty children received a surprise coach at the Avalanche's Mile High Mites Learn to Play session Sunday when Cale Makar joined them on the ice.

The Colorado defenseman helped guide the young players through skating and skill drills. Former Avalanche players Milan Hejduk, John-Michael Liles and Mark Rycroft also coached at the event, along with former NHL forward Yan Stastny.

Makar said he hopes appearances like this help children enjoy hockey and see the sport as fun from an early age. He described growing the game in Colorado as a responsibility shared by the players and the organization.

Registration for Mile High Mites Learn to Play remains open through the Avalanche.
