Knuble and Bjarnason Stand Out as Flyers Rookie Camp Ends

Cole Knuble needed only one of Philadelphia's two Rookie Series games against the New York Rangers to make an impression before Flyers rookie camp ended.

Skating on a top line with Alex Bump and Jett Luchanko, the 22-year-old advanced play with his speed and was active on the forecheck despite his 5-foot-10, 192-pound frame, according to The Hockey News' review of the camp.

The former fourth-round pick joined the Lehigh Valley Phantoms late last season after three years at Notre Dame. He recorded one goal and two assists in seven AHL games after producing 21 goals and 70 points over his final 70 college games.

Goaltender Carson Bjarnason also strengthened his case. The 21-year-old played a full game against the Rangers and allowed two goals, both on the power play. He is entering his second professional season after going 14-11-7 with a 3.43 goals-against average and .877 save percentage in 32 games for Lehigh Valley as a rookie.

Devin Kaplan had a quieter camp. The 22-year-old forward recorded five goals and eight assists in 49 games for the Phantoms last season and is returning from a season-ending injury and surgery. Noah Powell drew a stronger review in a similar checking role.

Defensemen Oliver Bonk, Ty Murchison, Spencer Gill, Brek Liske and Maksim Sokolovskii also earned positive evaluations. Murchison wore the captain's “C” in the first Rookie Series game.

Philadelphia's main training camp opens Thursday. Knuble and Bjarnason will carry the momentum from rookie camp into the next stage of the Flyers' evaluation.
