Jets coach Scott Arniel admits contract year 'not comfortable'
Winnipeg’s coach says he will focus on his work as he enters the last season covered by his contract.
Scott Arniel says working without a deal beyond this season is an uncomfortable position, but he intends to keep his attention on coaching Winnipeg.
Sportsnet reported Thursday that Arniel is approaching 2026-27 with one season remaining on his contract. In an interview with Winnipeg Free Press reporters Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe, he acknowledged the uncertainty. “I mean, it’s not comfortable. I’ll be honest,” Arniel said.
Having experienced contract uncertainty during his playing career too, Arniel said he is giving himself the same advice he gives players: concentrate on the work and allow performance to make the case. He hopes his future will be settled, while recognizing that he still has a team to coach.
Arniel also told the Free Press that winning a championship in Winnipeg remains a personal ambition. He recalled joining the Jets in 1981 and said his wife’s connection to the city adds to what a Stanley Cup there would mean to him.
