Ilitch says Red Wings' hockey operations search has no deadline

Detroit’s owner shares fans’ frustration and says the next hockey operations president will decide whether to hire a general manager.

Detroit Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch said Thursday that he has not set a deadline to hire a president of hockey operations, according to Sportsnet, citing his comments to reporters before the game against Philadelphia.

Ilitch said the person hired would decide whether and when to appoint a general manager. He also expressed support for interim general manager Shawn Horcoff and acknowledged fans’ dissatisfaction with the team’s results.

Horcoff took over as interim general manager in September after Steve Yzerman moved into an advisory role in July. In his first public comments in the job, Horcoff said he wanted to improve the current team rather than begin another rebuild, NHL.com reported.
