Hurricanes to Raise Second Cup Banner Against Panthers Sept. 29

The Carolina Hurricanes will raise their second Stanley Cup championship banner Sept. 29 before hosting the Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center to open the 2026-27 NHL season, the league announced Wednesday.

The 5 p.m. puck drop is part of an opening-night tripleheader on ESPN. The matchup pits the most recent champions against the winners from 2024 and 2025. Florida missed the playoffs last season after injuries derailed what looked like another title run.

Carolina swept through the 2026 playoffs, losing just three games total, before defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in six games in the Cup Final. The Hurricanes clinched the title June 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, winning the franchise's second championship and first since 2006.

The full 2026-27 schedule will be released Thursday. The season expands to 84 games per team, up from 82, adding two more divisional matchups for each club. The 1,344 total games will be the most in NHL history and the first time the league has played an 84-game slate since 1993-94.

Carolina won the Metropolitan Division last season under head coach Rod Brind'Amour, who lifted the Cup in June and will be behind the bench for his ninth consecutive season. The Hurricanes have reached the playoffs in all eight years of Brind'Amour's tenure.

The Sept. 29 opener will also feature the Montreal Canadiens at Toronto and the New York Rangers at Boston as part of the five-game curtain-raiser, with Chicago visiting Vegas in the nightcap.
