Griffins Coach Wants Noah Dower Nilsson to Shoot More
Dan Watson praised the Swedish forward's skill and reliability after Detroit's prospect tournament while challenging him to keep his competitive level high.
Grand Rapids Griffins coach Dan Watson likes Noah Dower Nilsson's skill and reliability. His clearest request for the Detroit Red Wings prospect is simple: shoot the puck more.
"I think he's extremely skilled," Watson said. "The one thing we haven't seen enough out of him is a shot. He can shoot the puck."
Dower Nilsson, Detroit's third-round pick in 2023, skated on the top line for Tuesday's prospect tournament finale against Columbus. The Swedish forward had also practiced with Grand Rapids at the end of last season.
Watson said Dower Nilsson can create offense but must maintain his competitive edge and intensity. The coach is evaluating how each prospect could eventually fit a role in Grand Rapids.
Two Detroit prospects missed the tournament because of injuries. Defenseman Will Murphy, selected 172nd overall in 2025, has been out since Feb. 7 with a lower-body injury. Winger Luka Arkko is dealing with an undisclosed injury.
Center Nate Danielson and defenseman Anton Johansson are expected to receive extended looks at Detroit's main camp. Watson said both players must take on leadership responsibilities because they already understand the organization's systems and expectations.
