Grand Rapids-Bound Group Outscores Red Wings Veterans 6-0 in Camp Scrimmage
Detroit coach Todd McLellan praised the prospects’ execution Sunday while planning preseason ice time for a separate young forward line.
A Detroit Red Wings training-camp group made up largely of players projected for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins outscored the NHL veteran group 6-0 in Sunday's scrimmage, which emphasized power-play and penalty-kill work. Coach Todd McLellan praised the younger players' effort and execution but said he was dissatisfied with the veterans' session, according to a Detroit Hockey Now account of camp.
McLellan also said he has assembled a prospective young line of Nate Danielson, Carter Mazur and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård for preseason evaluation. That line should not be confused with the group that produced Sunday's result: Danielson and Brandsegg-Nygård were among five players who had the day off.
The coach said the rested players were slated for back-to-back preseason games at Columbus on Monday and Pittsburgh on Tuesday, with later appearances depending on how the team evaluates them.
