Giroux Retains Senators’ Second Power-Play Role at Camp
Coach Travis Green praised the 38-year-old after camp opened, and Ottawa used him on both special-teams units Sunday.
Claude Giroux remains a key part of Ottawa's special-teams plans entering the preseason. On Sunday, the Senators' first dedicated special-teams practice of camp, the 38-year-old forward worked on the second power-play unit with Thomas Chabot and Shane Pinto. Carter Yakemchuk and Andre Burakovsky rotated through, as did Fabian Zetterlund and Stephen Halliday. Giroux also took penalty-kill repetitions, according to the Senators.
Coach Travis Green had singled out Giroux after Thursday's opening camp session, saying he looked 25 again. Giroux is entering his fifth season in Ottawa, and Halliday said the veteran's pace and faceoff work have motivated younger players in their group.
Giroux described Sunday's work as a first chance to establish the basic positions and plays on the power play and penalty kill. Ottawa is preparing for its first preseason game in Trois-Rivières on Monday.
