Garand focuses on Rangers opportunity amid uncertain goalie picture
The 24-year-old says he is concentrating on his play as injuries reshape New York’s crease.
Dylan Garand says he is trying to stay focused on the opportunity in front of him as injuries reshape the New York Rangers’ goaltending.
The 24-year-old told ESPN that he was concentrating on making the most of his playing time. Coach Mike Sullivan praised his confidence and his understanding of his role in helping New York win.
Garand had cleared waivers and been assigned to Hartford before Joonas Korpisalo suffered a lower-body injury. NHL.com reported that Korpisalo is out week to week and that Igor Shesterkin’s subsequent injury against Washington on Oct. 9 ended his season.
That left Garand with an unexpected opening. He told ESPN that he had arranged an apartment in Connecticut but had little time to settle in before returning to the NHL.
The Victoria, B.C., native was selected 103rd overall by the Rangers in the 2020 draft. NHL.com reported that he made 19 saves in New York’s 6-2 win over Vancouver in the club’s first game after learning Shesterkin would miss the season.
