Elliotte Friedman does not expect an imminent trade involving Alexander Nikishin. The Sportsnet insider said on Saturday Headlines that the unsigned defenceman could instead return to the Carolina Hurricanes, though the sides would still need to settle a contract.

Friedman described Carolina as open to a return and said other teams were considering that possibility. His report did not announce an agreement or a trade.

Nikishin, 25, is a restricted free agent who missed training camp. Carolina general manager Eric Tulsky said before the season opener that both sides were seeking a resolution, according to NHL.com.

In 2025-26, Nikishin recorded 11 goals and 22 assists in 81 regular-season appearances. He added one assist in 17 playoff games.
