Friedman: Hurricanes allow Nikishin to speak with other teams

Carolina Hurricanes restricted free agent defenceman Alexander Nikishin has permission to speak with other teams, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Friday. Nikishin has not joined the Hurricanes' training camp while his contract remains unresolved.
On *32 Thoughts: The Podcast*, Friedman said he learned of the permission late Thursday. He raised a possible multi-team trade in the discussion, but presented it as speculation; no trade or new contract has been announced.
Nikishin, 24, recorded 11 goals and 22 assists in 81 games as an NHL rookie last season, when Carolina won the Stanley Cup. The new report concerns permission to explore other clubs, a development beyond his previously reported absence from camp.
