Firebirds prepare for Reign rematch after late preseason shootout loss

The Coachella Valley Firebirds will open their 2026-27 AHL season against the Ontario Reign on Friday at Acrisure Arena, five days after losing their lone preseason game to the same opponent in a shootout.

Coachella Valley led the Sept. 27 exhibition until Ontario tied it in the final seconds of regulation. The Reign won 2-1 in the shootout. The Firebirds' preseason goal came from Tyson Jugnauth, according to KESQ.

Friday's opener is the first of three regular-season meetings between the Pacific Division rivals in 10 days. The Firebirds visit Ontario on Saturday, then host the Reign again Oct. 11, according to the club's schedule.

Coach Derek Laxdal told NBC Palm Springs he was comfortable with a short training camp after time with Seattle's NHL club. “I think the shorter the better,” he said. In separate comments to Pacific North Hockey, Laxdal said he expects mistakes from a young group and that the first breakout pass and getting the puck deep will help its players earn trust.

The quick rematch gives Coachella Valley an immediate chance to build on its narrow preseason loss as the new AHL season begins.
