Ex-Arizona chief justice to lead review of ASU hockey collapse
Arizona State has tapped former Arizona Supreme Court chief justice Scott Bales to review the August workout in which player Matthew Mayich collapsed, but the Mayich family says the scope is too narrow.
Arizona State appointed former Arizona Supreme Court chief justice Scott Bales to examine the August workout in which hockey player Matthew Mayich collapsed. The St. Louis Blues have identified Mayich as one of their prospects.
An Oct. 2 memo from university official James Rund says Bales will consider evidence gathered by ASU, lawyers representing Mayich's family and teammates, and law enforcement. His recommendations will address outdoor training arrangements, staffing, emergency responses and the use of outside consultants. ASU requested completion by early December.
In a statement released through lawyer Rob Carey, Mayich's family welcomed Bales' appointment but wanted a broader inquiry into responsibility for the workout and its consequences. The family also asked for reporting to the Arizona Board of Regents and an expanded mandate or a second investigator.
According to Carey, Mayich suffered exertional heat stroke that reduced the flow of oxygen to his brain, and he is unlikely to recover. ESPN also reported a separate ASU police investigation and coach Greg Powers' administrative leave.
