Cole Caufield Scores Twice as Canadiens Beat Senators in Overtime

Cole Caufield scored twice, including the overtime winner, as the Montreal Canadiens rallied to beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 in Monday’s Kraft Hockeyville preseason game at Colisée Vidéotron in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

It was Caufield’s second overtime goal in two preseason games this week. He led the NHL with 12 game-winning goals last season.

Ottawa led twice. William Eklund, making his Senators debut, opened the scoring 89 seconds into the game off a feed from Dylan Cozens. Canadiens defenseman Jayden Struble tied it three minutes later with a shot from the slot, and the score remained level until Cozens restored Ottawa’s lead in the final minute of the second period.

Caufield tied the game midway through the third on the power play after taking a pass from Lane Hutson. Hutson also assisted on the overtime winner, which Caufield scored from the slot.

Samuel Montembeault made eight saves and Jakub Dobes made nine as they split the game for Montreal, with each allowing one goal. Sam Ersson played the full game for Ottawa and made 35 saves.

Eklund skated on the left side of Cozens during Senators training camp, with former San Jose teammate Fabian Zetterlund on the other wing. “I’ve liked [the line] so far in camp, [but] it’s still early,” coach Travis Green said after Monday’s morning skate. “Like everyone knows, you can be a good line in training camp — can you be a good line in the regular season?”

The game celebrated Saint-Boniface, Quebec, which was named the 2025 Kraft Hockeyville winner and received the opportunity to host an NHL preseason game nearby in Trois-Rivières.
