Canadiens' Mike Matheson fined $5,000 for roughing Ridly Greig
The NHL says the fine is the maximum allowed under the collective agreement for the incident during Saturday’s preseason game in Montreal.
The NHL Department of Player Safety fined Montreal Canadiens defenceman Mike Matheson $5,000 for roughing Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig during Saturday's preseason game in Montreal, the league announced Sunday.
The league said the incident occurred at 10:43 of the second period. Matheson received a minor penalty for roughing. The $5,000 fine is the maximum allowed under the collective agreement and will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Sportsnet reported that Greig brought Matheson down near the Montreal net and that Matheson responded with a punch to Greig's head, followed by further blows as they fell to the ice. Sportsnet said both players received two-minute roughing penalties.
