Bruins name David Pastrnak their 28th captain
Boston fills the captaincy left vacant by Brad Marchand’s 2025 departure, turning to a winger who has spent his entire NHL career with the Bruins.
The Boston Bruins named David Pastrnak the 28th captain in franchise history Sunday. The position had been vacant since Brad Marchand was traded to Florida in March 2025. Pastrnak had served as an alternate captain since the 2021-22 season.
Pastrnak, 30, has played all 833 of his NHL regular-season games for Boston. He has 420 goals and 513 assists for 933 points, ranking fifth in Bruins history in goals and sixth in points, according to the club.
He posted 29 goals and 71 assists in 77 games in 2025-26, giving him 100 points for a fourth consecutive season. Boston's release says his 20:39 average ice time led the team's forwards.
Pastrnak won the Maurice Richard Trophy after scoring 48 goals in 2019-20. His 61-goal season in 2022-23 made him the second Bruin, after Phil Esposito, to reach 60 in a season.
The club is also preparing to retire former captain Patrice Bergeron's No. 37 in December. He will become the 10th former Bruins captain to receive that honour.
