Blue Jackets Ink Carson Soucy to Pro Tryout Deal
The veteran defenceman gets a training camp look in Columbus after splitting last season between the Rangers and Islanders.
Carson Soucy has a camp invite. The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Sunday that the veteran defenceman has signed a professional tryout contract, adding a body to their blue line group before training camp opens.
Soucy, 32, started last season with the New York Rangers before being traded to the Islanders ahead of the deadline in exchange for a third-round pick. Between the two clubs he played 76 games and put up five goals and seven assists with a minus-six rating, along with 91 blocked shots and 105 hits.
The Viking, Alta., native was a fifth-round pick (137th overall) in 2013 and has since suited up for the Minnesota Wild, Seattle Kraken, Vancouver Canucks, Rangers and Islanders. His career line sits at 32 goals and 67 assists in 441 games across eight seasons.
A PTO carries no guarantees. It gets a player into camp, into exhibition games, and in front of a coaching staff that can decide from there whether to offer a contract. For a left-shot defenceman with more than 400 NHL games behind him, that is the pitch: show enough in a few weeks to earn a deal.
