Mathew Barzal is expected to resume skating this weekend or early next week as he works back from knee inflammation, New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche said Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Barzal has been off the ice for two weeks and missed training camp. Once he begins skating again, the Islanders will watch how his knee responds before assessing his next steps.

Darche said Barzal had made significant progress over the past week. He expressed confidence that the centre could regain his readiness with a few practices, although he did not set a date for Barzal to return to games.

"You give him a few practices and he’ll be good to go," Darche said.

The update came ahead of the Islanders’ season opener in Toronto on Wednesday.
