Avalanche Pipeline Adds New Mexico for 2026-27
Colorado keeps its AHL relationship with the Eagles and begins a multi-year ECHL partnership with the expansion Goatheads.
The Colorado Avalanche's minor-league pipeline for 2026-27 runs through the Colorado Eagles in the American Hockey League and a new ECHL affiliate in New Mexico.
Colorado and the ECHL announced Feb. 21 that the expansion New Mexico Goatheads would become the Avalanche's ECHL affiliate starting this season under a multi-year agreement. The team will play at Rio Rancho Events Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
The Eagles remain Colorado's AHL affiliate. The Avalanche's announcement said the Utah Grizzlies had served as its ECHL affiliate from 2018 through 2026, making New Mexico the next lower-league partner in the development setup.
Trenton is a separate ECHL destination. The former Utah franchise is now the Trenton Ironhawks, and the ECHL lists the Ironhawks as affiliated with the New York Islanders, not Colorado.
The ECHL's 2026-27 season opens Oct. 16, when the expansion Goatheads are scheduled to host the Idaho Steelheads.
