AHL MVP DiPietro Enters Bruins Camp With Backup Job Open
The reigning AHL MVP has a path to Boston's No. 2 role after Joonas Korpisalo was traded to the Rangers.
Michael DiPietro enters Bruins training camp with an NHL roster opening after two dominant seasons in Providence.
DiPietro was voted the AHL's most valuable player for 2025-26 after going 34-8-1 with a league-leading 1.91 goals-against average, .930 save percentage and 34 wins. He also won the Baz Bastien Award as the league's outstanding goaltender for a second consecutive season.
Boston created an opening behind Jeremy Swayman when it traded Joonas Korpisalo to the New York Rangers on July 1 for forward Kalle Vaisanen and a fourth-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft.
DiPietro made his Bruins debut Feb. 26, briefly replacing Korpisalo and stopping both shots he faced in a win over Columbus. He finished the season in Providence, where he had taken over the starting job during the previous two years.
The Athletic included DiPietro among eight potential breakout NHL goaltenders for 2026-27. His AHL performance and Korpisalo's departure give him an opportunity to earn the backup job, but the role will be decided in camp.
