Steelheads Re-Sign Rookie of the Year Liam Malmquist
The 25-year-old forward, who put up 47 points in his first pro season, is back in Boise on an ECHL contract for 2026-27.
The Idaho Steelheads have signed forward Liam Malmquist to an ECHL contract for the 2026-27 season, the club announced Monday, bringing back the winner of its Rookie of the Year award.
Malmquist, 25, played all 72 regular-season games for Idaho last season plus two playoff contests, finishing with 47 points on 26 goals and 21 assists. That tied him with Kaleb Pearson for second in team scoring, and the two shared the club's rookie scoring lead. He is only the eighth rookie in Steelheads history to reach 25 goals.
The signing was announced by head coach and director of hockey operations Everett Sheen. Idaho is the ECHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars.
Before turning pro, the Edina, Minnesota native led the University of St. Thomas in points (45), goals (20) and assists (25) across 38 games in 2024-25, earning CCHA First All-Star Team honors. He spent two seasons at St. Thomas after two years at Wisconsin, and after his college career ended he signed an amateur tryout with the AHL's Manitoba Moose, scoring twice in five games.
The 5-foot-10 left-shot forward also played two junior seasons with the Penticton Vees.
Idaho opens its 29th season Oct. 16 at New Mexico and hosts Allen on Oct. 23 in its home opener.
