ECHL Season Opens Oct. 16 With New Mexico Goatheads Debut

The ECHL's 2026-27 regular season begins Friday, Oct. 16, with seven games across the league.

Opening night features Trenton at Trois-Rivières, Norfolk at Savannah, South Carolina at Greenville, Reading at Greensboro, Wheeling at Indy, Rapid City at Kansas City and Idaho at New Mexico.

The final matchup marks the regular-season debut of the New Mexico Goatheads. The expansion club will play at the Rio Rancho Events Center after the ECHL approved New Mexico as its 31st member for the 2026-27 season.

New Mexico enters its first season as the ECHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche and the AHL's Colorado Eagles. The multi-year affiliation gives Goatheads players a route through Colorado's development system.

That ECHL-to-AHL path was visible elsewhere this offseason. Goaltender Isaiah Saville signed an AHL contract with Colorado after posting a 2.67 goals-against average and .910 save percentage in 29 games with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits last season. He also appeared in eight games for the Ontario Reign.

The Hershey Bears signed goaltender Ben Kraws after he went 16-12-2 in 31 games with the Idaho Steelheads. Those moves show how quickly a strong ECHL season can lead to an AHL opportunity.

For New Mexico, that development role begins with an opening-night test against Idaho and the first chapter of professional hockey's return to Rio Rancho since the 2008-09 season.
