Stoney Creek Sabres Win Gold on Home Ice at University Showcase
The host Sabres shut out Lovell Academy 3-0 in the final of a 68-team junior women's tournament.
The Stoney Creek Sabres won their own University Showcase, beating Lovell Academy 3-0 in the gold-medal game Sunday.
Charlee Love, Aneta Paroubkova and Olivia Decaria scored in the final, while Darby Oakes recorded the shutout.
Sabres forward Mikayla Barnes tied for the tournament scoring lead with seven goals and 13 points in six games. OHA Edmonton's Ryann Chimera also finished with 13 points. Chimera and Ottawa Sens forward Maggie Hughson shared the tournament lead with eight goals each.
The field included 68 teams from seven Canadian provinces and 14 U.S. states. Twenty-seven teams came from Ontario and five from Quebec. Nearly 25 players who had taken part in the Canada-United States under-18 series were also in the tournament.
Other leading scorers included Maïka Gauthier of John Abbott College, Kate Pasma of the Mississauga Hurricanes, Avery Sam of OHA Edmonton, Arabelle Weiss and Isla McCoubrey of the Waterloo Ravens, Brittyn Lybecker of Culver Academy, Bronwyn Caithness of the Etobicoke Dolphins and Avery Jones of the Nepean Wildcats.
