The core players who helped Canada win gold at last year's IIHF world hockey championship will be back this year.

Forwards Rick Nash, Shane Doan, Eric Staal, Jonathan Toews and goaltender Cam Ward are among the first group of players who have committed to playing for Canada next month in Halifax and Quebec City.

Rick Nash will suit up for Canada if surgery goes well

The results of minor throat surgery will determine whether Rick Nash will be part of the team that defends Canada's gold medal at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Canada goes for speed, size naming roster for under-18 worlds

The 22 players named Wednesday to Canada's team for the IIHF world under-18 hockey championship each has a clean slate with Pat Quinn.

The veteran head coach has no pre-determined plans of how to utilize his roster and intends to use the leadup to the April 13-23 tournament in Kazan, Russia to determine how his lines shake out.

Canada names team for inaugural women's under-18 world tournament

Canadian forwards Marie-Philip Poulin, Brianne Jenner and Natalie Spooner will be among the top prospects in the spotlight during the inaugural women's under-18 world hockey championship.

Their ultimate goal is to represent the country at the highest level and the Jan. 7-12 tournament in Calgary represents a great opportunity to prove they can be future Olympians.
