QUEBEC - Even when playing for a consolation prize, beating the Swedes is sweet for Finland.

Antti Pihlstrom and Janne Niskala staked Finland to an early lead and Niklas Backstrom made 36 saves for the shutout in a 4-0 victory over Sweden on Saturday to take the bronze medal at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

QUEBEC - Team Canada is on the verge of something very special.

The Russians are now the only team that stands in the way of Canada becoming the first country to win the IIHF World Hockey Championship on home soil since 1986.

It's been a dazzling run to the gold medal game for a Canadian squad that is arguably as skilled as any that has ever been sent to this tounrnament.

Nothing but respect among Canadians and Swedes ahead of semifinal

QUEBEC - Canada and Sweden haven't had a chance to develop much of a rivalry at this year's IIHF World Hockey Championship.

The two teams were separated by 1,000 kilometres for the first two weeks of the tournament and could only find nice things to say about each other after finally skating on the same ice surface here Thursday.

Weinhandl scores in OT to lift Swedes over Czechs in world hockey quarter-final

QUEBEC - The no-name Swedes are starting to look familiar at the IIHF World Hockey Championships.

Mattias Weinhandl scored 3:15 into overtime Wednesday to give Sweden a 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic and a berth in the semifinals, where it will face Canada on Friday.

Lundqvist solid as Sweden skates to 8-1 win over Denmark

QUEBEC - Henrik Lundqvist was solid in his first game of the tournament and Sweden bounced back from a disappointing loss to hammer Denmark 8-1 Thursday afternoon.

The Swedes had been the subject of criticism in the Swedish press after their 4-2 loss to Switzerland on Wednesday in their final round-robin game.
