Russia defeats Switzerland 5-3 to set up quarter-final rematch

QUEBEC - Unbeaten Russia got first-period goals from Dmitry Kalinin, Alexander Ovechkin and Maxim Sushinsky and went on to defeat Switzerland 5-3 on Monday at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Russia finished first in its group and dropped Switzerland to fourth place, so the two teams will meet again in the quarter-finals. The second-place Czech Republic will meet third-place Sweden in the other quarter-final in Quebec City on Wednesday.

QUEBEC - Vitali Koval is an unknown no more at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

The Belarusian netminder shed the "little-known" tag with a 52-save performance in which he nearly carried his upstart Belarus team to victory over a heavily favoured Russian squad before narrowly losing 4-3 in a shootout on Friday.

Russia dominant in 4-1 win over Denmark at World Championships

QUEBEC - Jannik Hansen was quick to see the positive side of Denmark's 4-1 loss to powerhouse Russia at the IIHF World Hockey Championship on Tuesday.

"We can't complain about the results, 4-1 against Russia is a small victory for us," said the Danish forward, a Vancouver Canucks prospect. "Last year we lost huge to them so this is a step in the right direction."

Morozov's overtime goal gives Russia win over Czech Republic

QUEBEC - Alexei Morozov bailed Ilya Kovalchuk out Sunday.

Morozov scored twice, including the overtime-winner, as Russia edged the Czech Republic 5-4 at the IIHF World Hockey Championships in action.

Morozov capped an exciting overtime by firing a shot past Czech goaltender Milan Hnilicka. The winning goal came after Kovalchuk failed to convert on a penalty shot earlier in the extra period.

QUEBEC - The Russian Ice Hockey Federation's top boss says the National Hockey League is still the destination of choice among most Russian players.

Vladislav Tretiak, sizing up Team Russia during a morning skate Tuesday at Le Pepsi Colisee, says the NHL is still the most competitive league in hockey and not likely to be supplanted any time soon.
