An otherwise quiet day on the NHL's free-agent front turned intriguing Monday when the Calgary Flames announced the signing of forward Todd Bertuzzi to a US$1.95-million, one-year contract.

While Flames fans flooded websites and debated the merits of bringing on the controversial winger, the signing came with the stamp of approval from captain Jarome Iginla - one of the most popular players in the NHL and certainly the poster boy for character and class in Calgary.

PITTSBURGH - Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury's bid for a 20th straight win on home ice may be a little less hectic with Tomas Holmstrom hobbled by a hamstring injury.

The Detroit Red Wing forward with whom he often reluctantly shares crease space was injured in the third period of Pittsburgh's 3-2 win in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final, but he expects to play through it in Game 4 on Saturday night at Mellon Arena.

Wings look for shorter shifts, better tempo after first loss of Cup final

PITTSBURGH - Henrik Zetterberg was a little sheepish when asked about some extended shifts he worked in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final.

"Sometimes if you've been out there 30 seconds and you have a chance to go for another rush, it's hard to go to the bench," the Detroit Red Wings star said Thursday. "Sometimes you want to create some more offence.

Stanley Cup hopes of a province ride on Daniel Cleary's shoulders

HARBOUR GRACE, N.L. - In the sixth grade, Daniel Michael Cleary wrote a short story about a "real, big tough guy from Detroit."

The handwritten tale about standing up to bullies, kept as a memento by his elementary school language teacher, concludes, "Moral: never be afraid." Nearly 20 years later Cleary is the tough guy, having conquered past demons as the Red Wings forward tries to become the first Newfoundlander to win the Stanley Cup.

PITTSBURGH - Five years ago Mike Babcock returned home with his Anaheim Ducks after being hammered in the opening two games of the Stanley Cup final.
