Don Cherry blasts NHL for shooting puck over glass penalty

PITTSBURGH - Don Cherry again ripped the NHL over the automatic penalty given to players who shoot the puck over the glass, a call that helped cost Canada gold at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Speaking shortly after Rick Nash's delay of game penalty led to Ilya Kovalchuk's overtime winner in Canada's 5-4 loss to Russia in the gold-medal game Sunday, Cherry ranted that the rule was ruining games.

Canadian coaches bring grit, work ethic to foreign hockey programs

QUEBEC - Canadian coaches are becoming a hot commodity on the international hockey scene.

At the IIHF World Hockey Championship, six of the 16 coaches are Canadian in addition to Team Canada's Ken Hitchcock.

Belarus, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, and Switzerland all have opted for a little Canadian influence at the helm.

Canada opens world under-18 championship by pounding Germany

KAZAN, Russia - Taylor Hall of the OHL's Windsor Spitfires had a goal and three assists as Canada opened the world under-18 hockey championship with a convincing 9-2 win over Germany on Sunday.

"We made some progress today, we had a good team outing, we did a lot of good things that were necessary and it's a step towards the direction we want to go" said Canadian team coach Pat Quinn, the former NHL player and longtime NHL head coach. "One game doesn't do much but it's a good way to start.

Pat Burns named assistant coach for Canada at world hockey championship

Pat Burns is back where he belongs.

Cancer has kept him from coaching since 2004 but he's finally feeling healthy enough to step behind the bench again. Burns has been named as one of Ken Hitchcock's three assistants on the Canadian staff for next month's IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Canada goes for speed, size naming roster for under-18 worlds

The 22 players named Wednesday to Canada's team for the IIHF world under-18 hockey championship each has a clean slate with Pat Quinn.

The veteran head coach has no pre-determined plans of how to utilize his roster and intends to use the leadup to the April 13-23 tournament in Kazan, Russia to determine how his lines shake out.
