Canada beats Denmark at men's world under-18 hockey championship

95 days 18 hours 33 minutes ago.

KAZAN, Russia - Corey Trivino had three goals and an assist as Canada improved to 2-0 at the world under-18 hockey championship with a 4-1 victory over Denmark on Tuesday.

Trivino assisted on Marco Scandella's goal. Trivino's linemates, Maxime Sauve and Matt Duchene, had three assists apiece. Canada outshot Denmark 43-19. Finland was scheduled to play Sweden in the late preliminary round game.

Canada opened the tournament with a 9-2 rout of Germany but head coach Pat Quinn said his team got off to a slower start versus Denmark. However the Canadians were able to weather the storm thanks to some solid stops by goaltender Jake Allen.

"We got off to a slower start than we did against Germany and Denmark had some good scoring chances early," said Quinn. "But Jake was really strong in goal for us.

"But I thought we got better as the game went on. In the third period I don't think we gave them a scoring chance."

Trivino was a one-man show offensively, but gave much of the credit to Sauve and Duchene.

"They really did a good job tonight," he said. "I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time.

"You have games like that sometimes."

The Canadians face a stiff test Wednesday when they face Russia, which is also unbeaten and considered to be the tournament favourite.

"I'm glad we've won both our games but we're capable of playing better," Quinn said. "Russia is a good team and we'll have to play better against them than we did today."

Trivino said the key for Canada on Wednesday will be playing a physical game against the Russians.

"I think we've got to lay the body," he said. "We were watching when they were playing Slovakia and Germany and we were saying how if we play the body hopefully they don't want to play with us because we play that tough Canadian style that will hopefully overpower their skill.

"It should be a good battle."
