QUEBEC - As Russia and Finland got ready on Thursday for their second semifinal meeting in as many years at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, most of the talk was about a skater who won't even play.

Ilya Kovalchuk, the gifted forward for the Atlanta Thrashers who has yet to score a goal in the tournament, got a one-game suspension when he was ejected from Russia's 6-0 quarter-final victory over Switzerland.

Russians trounce Swiss 6-0 to reach semis at world championship

QUEBEC - Russia has too good a team to hand over easy goals, but the Swiss on the other hand were in a giving mood on Wednesday night.

Swiss defencemen Raphael Diaz and Philippe Furrer put pucks into their own net past a startled Martin Gerber in the opening seven minutes to help Russia to a 6-0 victory in the quarter-finals of the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Finland survives late rally to knock out U.S. in OT at worlds

HALIFAX - The United States enjoyed a big high, then suffered an even bigger low.

Sami Lepisto's goal at 3:59 of overtime gave Finland a 3-2 win over the Americans in quarter-final action at the IIHF World Hockey Championship Wednesday before 9,176 fans.

Weinhandl scores in OT to lift Swedes over Czechs in world hockey quarter-final

QUEBEC - The no-name Swedes are starting to look familiar at the IIHF World Hockey Championships.

Mattias Weinhandl scored 3:15 into overtime Wednesday to give Sweden a 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic and a berth in the semifinals, where it will face Canada on Friday.
