QUEBEC - Canada and Sweden haven't had a chance to develop much of a rivalry at this year's IIHF World Hockey Championship.

The two teams were separated by 1,000 kilometres for the first two weeks of the tournament and could only find nice things to say about each other after finally skating on the same ice surface here Thursday.

QUEBEC - The no-name Swedes are starting to look familiar at the IIHF World Hockey Championships.

Mattias Weinhandl scored 3:15 into overtime Wednesday to give Sweden a 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic and a berth in the semifinals, where it will face Canada on Friday.

Switzerland, Norway look for upsets in world championship quarter-finals

QUEBEC - Miracle upsets are on the minds of Norway and Switzerland going into the quarter-finals of the IIHF World Hockey Championship on Wednesday.

In Quebec City, the Swiss face Alexander Ovechkin and the powerful Russians while the Czech Republic meets Sweden. In Halifax, Norway faces Canada and the United States plays Finland in the first single-game knockout round of the tournament.

Canada gets ready for quarter-final with Norway at world championship

HALIFAX - One by one, they filed onto the ice with huge smiles - kids in replica Team Canada jerseys, wives clutching cameras, grandparents simply taking it all in.

But there was a serious side to family picture day, too. It's one of the last times the whole Canadian entourage could count on being together at this IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Halifax, Quebec City expected to draw 450,000 fans for world hockey

HALIFAX - Although still much in the hunt for gold on the ice, Canada will likely be out of the medals when it comes to putting bums in seats.

Despite hoping to set an attendance record in its first try as host of the IIHF World Hockey Championship, Canada will fall well short of the 552,097 who attended the 2004 tournament in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Eric Staal leaves Team Canada after death of grandfather

PHILADELPHIA - Penguins centre Jordan Staal will fly home to Thunder Bay, Ont., on Wednesday morning to attend his grandfather's funeral. The Pittsburgh player is expected to return to Philadelphia the same night.

Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final against the Flyers goes Thursday night in Philadelphia.
