HALIFAX - Canada faces an opponent at this IIHF World Hockey Championship that it has never seen before.
As much as the Russians and Finns and Americans stand in the way of a gold medal, so does the burden of playing at home. It seems strange to consider home ice a disadvantage but only one of the last 21 host countries has even played in the gold-medal game - and Sweden had to settle for silver in 1995.

QUEBEC - At least Ken Hitchcock knew it was coming.
The Canadian coach predicted Monday morning that his team was in for a "wakeup call" just hours before it was beaten 4-1 by Russia in the final exhibition game before the start of the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

QUEBEC - Given where this season started, it's little wonder Sam Gagner is just happy to be here.
He's part of the Canadian team at the IIHF World Hockey Championship but might end up being a spectator once the tournament starts because he's considered the 14th forward.

QUEBEC - Jason Spezza and Eric Staal don't want to be sitting in the stands the next time a Canadian hockey team competes at the Olympics.
They were members of the taxi squad in 2006 and could only watch as Canada was beaten by Russia in the quarter-finals. Both players are looking for a much bigger role at the 2010 Games in Vancouver and know that they can do themselves a huge favour by standing out at the upcoming IIHF World Hockey Championship.
