Daniel Briere hopes third time in conference finals the charm

PITTSBURGH - Daniel Briere is making May hockey a habit. But what he'd really like is to finally play a series in June.

The Philadelphia Flyers centre is playing in the NHL's Eastern Conference final for a third straight season. This time, he's looking for a different ending after being on the losing end with the Buffalo Sabres in 2005-06 and '06-07. Several days from now, he's hoping to be shaking the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins with a smile on his face.

VOORHEES, N.J. - Winning the Eastern Conference final would be icing on the cake for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Actually, it would mean another cake. The Flyers savoured a cake on Wednesday, the dessert becoming their tasty good-luck tradition before the first game of each playoff series. Coach John Stevens cooked up the idea as a motivational tool in the minor leagues and now he uses it on the Flyers, who - sweet tooth or toothless - want to eat cake and have their Stanley Cup, too.

In that one, Briere played for the enemy Buffalo Sabres. The boos were expected two years ago. When he heard them again during a mid-season slump in his first season in Philadelphia, well, the Flyers centre was caught by surprise.

Daniel Briere sidelined by shoulder injury

PHILADELPHIA - Daniel Briere sat out Philadelphia's game against Buffalo on Tuesday night with a shoulder injury.

Briere sprained his right shoulder in the Flyers' shootout loss at the New York Rangers on Sunday. The star centre hadn't missed a game since the Flyers lured him away from the Sabres with an eight-year, $52 million contract last summer.
