General manager Bob Gainey failed to land the impact player he sought at the NHL trading deadline on Tuesday, but he did cause a surprise by trading veteran goaltender Crostobal Huet to the Washington Capitals for a second round pick in the 2009 draft.

MONTREAL - Cristobal Huet is thriving on a heavy workload since ending the debate on whether he or rookie Carey Price should be the starting goalie for the Montreal Canadiens.
Huet was named as the NHL's third star for the month of January on Friday. He had an 8-2-1 record with a 2.40 goals-against average and one shutout last month.

MONTREAL - As well as Carey Price played in his NHL debut this week, veteran Cristobal Huet will be in goal Saturday night for the Montreal Canadiens' home opener against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Coach Guy Carbonneau said the 32-year-old earned the honour as the team's No. 1 goaltender through good times and bad during the last two seasons.
