MONTREAL - In what was supposed to be a crowning achievement for him, Bob Gainey instead seized the moment at his number retirement ceremony to honour two men who helped him get there.
Gainey's No. 23 was retired by the Montreal Canadiens in an hour-long ceremony Saturday night prior to their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, coached by Gainey's long-time friend Ken Hitchcock.

HALIFAX - Canada's transport safety agency will conduct its own inquiry into how Laura Gainey was swept off a tall ship in a North Atlantic gale almost a year ago, saying it wants to look into safety issues missed by the original Cook Islands probe.
The daughter of Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey was hit by a large wave and thrown off the Picton Castle on the night of Dec. 8, 2006 as the three-masted barque sailed about 900 kilometres east of Cape Cod.

MONTREAL (CP) - Even though stars Daniel Briere and Ryan Smyth got away, Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey was glad to land Roman Hamrlik and Bryan Smolinski.
"It's not really frustrating because we don't go into it assuming we're going to come home with anybody," Gainey said Tuesday of the mad rush to sign NHL free agents when the flood gates open July 1.
