Hart finalists Iginla, Ovechkin, Malkin also up for Pearson Award

TORONTO - Hart Trophy finalists Jarome Iginla, Evgeni Malkin and Alexander Ovechkin will also be in the running for the Lester B. Pearson Award as the top player of the 2007-08 season, the NHL Players' Association announced Thursday.

Both awards recognize the league's best player, but are slightly different.

Colborne wins junior A player of year award

CALGARY - Joe Colborne of the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Camrose Kodiaks was named the Canadian Junior A Hockey League player of the year Thursday.

He finished second in AJHL scoring over the regular season with 90 points (33-57).

Colborne was named playoff MVP after leading his team with 16 points (8-8). The Kodiaks won their second consecutive AJHL title and advanced to the RBC Cup, Canada's national junior A championship.

Riendeau of Rouyn-Noranda Huskies named CHL player of the week

TORONTO - Forward Yannick Riendeau of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies was named Canadian Hockey League player of the week Thursday.

He had three goals and five assists for eight points in two playoff games last week. Riendeau scored two game-winning goals to help the Huskies sweep the Saint John Sea Dogs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Telus Division final.

TORONTO - Juha Metsola of the Lethbridge Hurricanes was named Canadian Hockey League goaltender of the week Thursday.

He was 2-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .960 save percentage in two playoff games last week.

NEW YORK - A veteran captain and two of the NHL's young guns were named finalists for the Hart Trophy on Tuesday.

Calgary Flames winger Jarome Iginla, Pittsburgh Penguins centre Evgeni Malkin and Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin are up for the award, given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team.
