Ron Wilson needs to figure out that he gets paid to coach a so-called Stanley Cup contender while television reporters earn a living by asking the tough questions.
So, seeing how the San Jose Sharks are down 2-0 to the Dallas Stars in a West semi-final and TV ratings are peaking over at TSN, let's attempt to connect the dots to figure out who, as we sit here, is better at their job.
In case you missed it, Wilson threw a mini-hissy fit and stormed away Sunday when asked if (paraphrasing) captain Patrick Marleau had any bloody idea that the Sharks were actually involved in a second-round playoff series.
Actually, to be fair, the question wasn't quite that brash. Wilson was simply asked if he should expect more out of his captain.
"No," Wilson stated tersely before storming off.
"It's always frickin' negative," he added. We can only assume he didn't mean what post the black cable goes on when boosting your car battery.
Yeah, and? Judging by the boxscores in this series, there isn't a hell of a lot to be positive about if you are a fan of the teal.
Oh, and did we mention that Marleau was minus-2 with three giveaways in Game 2?
Should the question have been re-phrased with a positive spin?
"You know, Ron, your captain is sucking royally this series but he lit it up against Calgary, huh?"
My, how life has changed in San Jose. When the Sharks were losing just twice in regulation over their final 22 games, every scribe in the league was puckering up to kiss Wilson's backside.
Now the questions, as much as Wilson may not want to hear them, are a little tougher.
Not only is Marleau MIA, but Joe Thornton continues his annual disappearing act. A Vezina Trophy favorite goaltender is putting up a save percentage that could be matched by some Wednesday night beer league retread and a certain high-priced superstar defensemen, at this point, probably looks better in Buffalo.
Things change, of course, but right now, the Sharks don't look like a very good hockey team.
No sense throwing a tantrum when people wonder why.
