Dave Nonis was hoping for another chance to get things turned around for the Vancouver Canucks. He didn't get it.
Nonis was fired as general manager of the Canucks Monday after three full seasons on the job. Nonis took over from mentor Brian Burke in May 2004.
Prior to stepping into the role, Nonis spent six seasons as senior vice-president and director of Hockey Operations.
"The decision to relieve Dave of his duties was difficult," said Canucks chairman Francesco Aquilini.
"We want to thank Dave for the many contributions he has made helping to build our organization during his tenure. However, I think this important change in leadership is critical to the future of the team and the direction we need to take. It's not acceptable to our fans or to us as owners that our team isn't in the playoffs."
The Canucks recently missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons under Nonis.
